Electronic Mapping As a result of instrumentation purchased with a National Science Foundation Instrumentation and Laboratory Improvement grant, we have been able to integrate electronic mapping tools into many of our projects. These tools do not replace traditional mapping on topographic or air photo base; rather, they support this work by allowing greater precision.
June 17. On this day, we work on familiarization with topographic maps. Working with a partner, you use GPS to create a map of several badlands hills in Elk Basin.
June 30-July 3. GPS is used in our Heart Mountain fault project. Here rocks and structures are less well exposed than at Elk Basin. Much of the mapping area is forested, making location on a topographic map difficult. You use GPS to help locate contacts and structures in the forested areas, improving the precision of your maps.
June 12-16. Again, you use GPS to improve the precision of your location of contacts on your map. Much of the field area is wooded and gently rolling, making the use of GPS important. |
